How very softly you tip-toed into my world,
almost silently and only a moment you stayed.
But what an imprint your footprints have left upon my heart.
We will forever miss you Howard. YOu made us believe, at least for a moment, that we were the best.
ReplyDeleteHoward Brinton, The Pied Piper
ReplyDeleteTo all my Real Estate friends, family and Babs, we have lost a great man and mentor in our world of Real Estate.
I first met Howard when he was 37 years old. I was 22 and had just started in Real Estate. In those days, we sat in the office waiting for the phone to ring. All of the men wore white belts and white shoes, drove Cadillacs or Novas. We had 1 woman, who was the first woman to ever be hired by Tom Fannin Realty in the ‘70’s. I remember everybody drank coffee, read the paper and smoked cigarettes except me. I remember my desk was four feet from the toilet, so I did not mind the smoke!
So this guy Howard, comes into the office and says he is doing a taping for Real Estate. He said he needed an audience and “clappers”. The “clappers” were people that would listen to his jokes and stories and laugh or clap on cue when we would get the signal. Howard said we had to stay with him from 9:00 – 4:00 and that he would give us lunch. Since I had not made a sale in 4 months and my first check was only $400, I needed a lunch!
The taping was for CRS and featured John Clements and Del Bain. I watch these guys have the time of their lives, laughing and telling jokes and Real Estate stories! By the end of the day, I knew there was “life” outside my smoky office. The next day the boys,
Howard, John and Del played golf. I remember seeing them off at the hotel. I thought from that day, What a life, taping “shows” & playing golf. I just knew Howard was going somewhere with all of his energy and laughter! We all now know the next 34 years were going to be endless conventions, seminars and Star Power events and lots of fun! I saw so many cities and states following him. I have always said he was the Pied Piper of Real Estate. And we kept on following!
Just a couple of years ago, Howard came to Austin, Texas to meet and see the old gang and Alex Charfen’s place. We had a wonderful time, but we all knew Howard was sick. That afternoon, Howard and I came up in two different elevators. The doors opened and we were on the same floor. We walked together down the hallway, talking and laughing until we got to our rooms that were across from each other. He was going to take a nap. We said our goodbyes. As I closed my door, I thought to myself that might be the last time I would see Howard. It was.
